The South Coast, and greater KZN province, is a bustling hive of activity and exhilarating excursions that every member of the family can enjoy. From delicious eateries and museums, to outdoor adventures and game-viewing, there certainly never is a dull moment when holidaying at this particular coast. We’ve given it some thought and planned Kridzil’s Bucket List for the South Coast.
Here are our recommended activities to incorporate into your next holiday:
Gondola Cruise at the Waterfront
Venture to the Durban Waterfront for a magical gondola cruise through the canal waterways. Guests book the experience online (here) and meet at the Zulumoon Gondolas Dock. A gondolier will welcome you and assist you in boarding your private gondola for a 30-minute, relaxing cruise on the water. Guests can choose between a day ride and night ride, for something a little more romantic. This activity is highly recommended to couples looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life or for families wanting to forge new memories.
Rock Art in uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park
Should you and your family have a road-trip planned and are looking for an activity further afield, we highly recommend scheduling a visit to the Drakensberg Park. Home to approximately 20 000 rock paintings across 500 different sites, the Drakensberg region is one of the richest sources for San rock art. There are many incredible sites to explore throughout the Park, though the depictions found in Kwa-Zulu Natal are the most famous. This excursion incorporates fascinating history, nature trails and fun traveling for a well-rounded day out in nature.
Turtle Nesting Site at iSimangaliso Wetland Park
Due to habitat destruction and hunting practises, as well as declining population numbers, Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles only have one nesting site in the whole of Africa: the coastline of the Wetland Park. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, in partnership with the Park, has protected these breeding grounds for over 50 years in an attempt to conserve the species natural habits. Guests can enjoy tours from November through March, as the turtles’ nesting rituals commence from November each year. Find out more, and view the various tour options available, here.
Canopy Zipline Tour in the Drakensberg
This adrenalin-spiking adventure is certainly not one to be missed! Located 4 hours from Kridzil Apartments within the Drakensberg escarpment, the Canopy Tour features zipline slides up-to 60m high with incredible, albeit fleeting, views of the forest from above. The tour commences with a safety briefing before guests are transported to the start. From here it’s a short hike to each slide and overall the excursion lasts 3 hours. This activity is suitable for children, as well as adults, but is only available on the weekends with a reservation. Book your adventure here.
OceanWalk Experience at uShaka Marine World
This innovative experience gives families the unique opportunity of walking underwater between varied fish species. Dubbed the ‘ocean walker’, the gear is fashioned somewhat like old scuba-diving suits of days past with the exception that the helmet is transparent so you have full view of the aquarium you’re exploring. This activity cannot be booked online but guests can call (031) 328 8097 to find out more. Kridzil guests are advised that uShaka Sea World tickets will still need to be purchased to gain access to the exhibits.
St. Lucia Hippo and Crocodile Boat Cruise
Step aboard the Advantage Cruiser, considered the “Jewel of the St. Lucia Estuary”, and cruise peacefully along the water’s edge with sundowner in hand, to spot hippos, crocodiles and fish eagles. The spacious double-decker passenger ferry is wheelchair, baby and child-friendly and makes for a wonderful afternoon activity that every member of the family will enjoy. A fully licenced bar on-board provides snacks and refreshments to round off this leisurely experience. Guests are advised that the meeting point is 30-minutes prior to departure at the St. Lucia’s Sunset Jetty.
The wonderful thing about holidaying at the South Coast is that there are ample activities and excursions to be experienced. Don’t believe us? View some of our other blogs for inspiration on what you and your family could get up to when staying at Kridzil:
