Meet Your New Host, Resort Manager: Martin Griessel

We are truly elated to welcome Martin Griessel back to the VRS family as our new Resort Manager. We couldn’t be more excited to have him on board, bringing with him a wealth of expertise, boundless enthusiasm, and a fresh perspective. We recently asked him to spare a moment to delve into his incredible journey in the Hospitality Industry, explore his passions, and gain insights into his time at Kridzil thus far so that you, our valued guests, could get a chance to get better acquainted with the incredible individual who will be leading the way at our Resort.

What is your career history, and more specifically, your history in the hospitality industry?

After completing two years in the South African National Defence Force, it is a great honour for me to say that the journey started at a VRS Resort. I entered the hospitality industry as a Receptionist at Mabalingwe Nature Reserve in 2007. With hard work and dedication, I quickly rose to the role of Banqueting Supervisor. As the years went by, I pursued opportunities at Aldam Estate and Loskop Valley Lodge. While I enjoyed long and successful periods at those Resorts, I eventually felt the need to explore new horizons.

I had a successful run at Khaya Ibhubesi, one of South Africa’s top conference venues, before returning to VRS as Resort Manager at Little Eden. I was later transferred to Mount Amanzi, and then back to Mabalingwe, where my journey began. I then enjoyed another stint at Khaya Ibhubesi, before taking up the role of Resort Manager at Kridzil. Throughout my career, I have embraced new challenges and opportunities, constantly seeking growth and development, but my heart has always been with the VRS family and I’m truly grateful to be back.

What is your favourite thing about Kridzil?

Working at the coast has always been a dream of mine, and when the chance finally came, I couldn’t let it slip away. It’s an incredible honour and privilege to be here. There is so much to love about Kridzil; from the dedicated team who go above and beyond to ensure that our Shareholders and guests have a memorable stay, to the breathtaking ocean views from some of the Units. Not to mention, the convenience of being just a short walk away from the beach.

Could you give us some insight into your normal daily routine and day-to-day focus as the Resort Manager?

My day typically kicks off bright and early with a visit to the gym before diving into work. I like to arrive at 07:00 to ensure I’m alert and ready when the staff Team arrives. First order of business is to check around the Resort, making sure everything is in order, and then I tackle some administrative tasks.

Teamwork truly makes the dream work so throughout the day, I make it a point to regularly check on the ongoing work and offer assistance wherever I can. Whether it’s lending a hand to housekeeping by making beds, or pitching in with maintenance on the pool or other duties, I’m there to support the team. Afterward, I return to my office to continue with some more admin work, planning, and reports.

What is your favourite thing to do, or how do you enjoy spending your time, when you’re not working?

Fishing has always been my passion, especially using the papgooi method. Recently, I’ve delved into the world of sea fishing, and it’s been an incredible thrill. Learning the tricks of the trade of sea fishing has become a captivating and enjoyable pastime. When I’m not casting my line, you’ll find me soaking up precious moments with my family on the beach, creating beautiful memories together.

Apart from fishing and family time, you’ll often find me in the kitchen, cooking up a storm and experimenting with chili sauce recipes. Cooking brings me immense joy – it’s more than just a hobby. There’s something magical about concocting unique and mouth-watering sauces that make every meal its own delicious experience.

What is your favourite guest story, or experience you’ve had with guests?

During my time at Mount Amanzi, I was informed that a guest specifically asked to see me. My curiosity piqued, and I made my way to their unit and found out that they were absolutely fascinated by how beautifully the towels were folded. They were eager to learn how it was done, and I couldn’t have been happier to oblige. I taught them how to fold various shapes like an elephant, a dog, and even a flower. It was a delightful experience for all of us, and I was happy to have been the one to teach them how to do it.

Tell us about a funny moment that you have experienced at Kridzil.

We recently had a hilarious encounter involving a wild female cat and her adorable litter of kittens. One day, as the cat strolled through our main gate, something caught our attention. From a distance, she looked quite strange, and we couldn’t resist getting closer to get a clear sight. To our astonishment, we realised that she had caught a full-grown chicken! We were left in stitches, as I had never seen a cat parading around with such a large catch before. We are still very clueless as to where on earth that chicken came from, considering there are no roaming chickens in the area. Regardless, it was a lighthearted and unforgettable moment that brought us all a good dose of laughter.

What are your top activities or spots for guests visiting Kridzil to try?

We often recommend our guests to explore some fantastic nearby places. Here are a couple of recommendations:

  • The Waffle House: Situated on the edge of Ramsgate Lagoon, a mere stone’s throw from the beach, The Waffle House is a must-visit. While it may lean toward the pricier side, trust us when we say it’s worth every penny. Prepare to be delighted and leave with your taste buds thoroughly satisfied. You won’t be disappointed! They specialise in freshly made Belgian waffles suited to their customers’ individual tastes.
  • Blue Lagoon: Just a short stroll from The Waffle House, Blue Lagoon is located right on Ramsgate’s main beach. The flavours and experience are certainly worthwhile. The Restaurant is famous for its incredible seafood menu and generous portions.
  • Wild 5 Adventures: If you’re an adrenaline junkie looking for an exhilarating experience, Wild 5 Adventures is the place for you! They offer a thrilling lineup of activities that cater to both extreme adventurers and those seeking a slightly tamer ride; from a heart-pounding 110m abseil and the world’s highest gorge swing to an exciting foefie-slide, an 85m suspension bridge, quad biking adventures, paintball battles, and guided trails for hiking and birding.

With Martin as the new captain of our ship, one thing is abundantly clear: a wave of excitement and transformation is sweeping through the Resort. Kridzil is poised to become a destination like no other, where cherished memories are made and cherished. We are truly inspired by his dedication to excellence and his genuine enthusiasm for hospitality and cannot wait to hear about all of your encounters with him!
