Visit the South Coast

The South Coast is an excellent holiday destination for families, friends and couples. Kwa-Zulu Natal’s mild climate makes for the perfect getaway throughout the year. KZN also offers activities to keep even the fussiest people entertained for hours on end. Without further ado, here are a few places we think you should visit during your next South Coast vacation.

1. Explore the Aliwal Shoal

Aliwal Shoal is the rocky remains of an ancient sand dune. Named after the ship ‘Aliwal’ that sunk in these waters, The reef can be found off the coast of Umkomaas. The reef houses incredible hard and soft corals as well as a variety of tropical and subtropical fish. International dive magazines regularly shower Aliwal Shoal with accolades.

2. Visit the Green Point Lighthouse

This provincial heritage site helps to warn ships of the Aliwal Shoal. The Green Point Lighthouse, which was erected in 1905, became fully automated in 1961. To avoid the Aliwal Shoal, ships rely on three lighthouses: Ifafa Beach, Port Shepstone and Green Point.

 

3. Have an educational experience at Crocworld

Crocworld Conservation Centre aims to connect people with nature and encourage them to embrace it as part of their lifestyle. Crocworld offers a fun and exciting day out for the whole family.

1. Attend a pottery workshop at RC Potteries

RC Potteries is a unique pottery shop filled with beautiful pieces of art. They offer lessons on how to spin, coil and do slab rolling as well as how to throw moulds. RC Potteries kindly offers painting lessons and there are a host of items ready to be painted.

 

2. Enjoy an unforgettable seafood experience at Fish on the River

Situated on the banks of the Umzimkulu river, Fish on the River, a seafood restaurant and takeaway, prides themselves in quality seafood at unbeatable prices. One simply cannot visit the South Coast without sampling exquisite seafood!

 

3. Admire astonishing views at the Whale Deck – Umtentweni Conservancy

Established in 2007 with the aim of protecting and promoting natural heritage in the Umtentweni area, The conservancy and viewing deck provides a vantage point where guests can drink in the magnificent views of whales migrating and even those of the annual Sardine Run.

1. Motor-heads unite at Dezzi Raceway

This 2.5km circuit is the only Motorsport South Africa (MSA) approved racing track in KZN. The Dezzi Raceway track includes two drift circuits which offer eight possible variations including the ability to race in two directions. In order to form the full circle, two high-speed corners join the two drift tracks. The Dezzi Raceway is a must for all motor enthusiasts.

 

2. Take beautiful photos at Leopard Rock

Leopard Rock is a famous spot for photos because of its overhanging rock and incredible views. Delight in home-cooked meals and enjoy spectacular views on the 21m Leopards Rock Café deck which overlooks the Umzimkulu River Gorge

 

3. Enjoy game drives at Lake Eland Game Reserve

Game Reserve might be in their name, but Lake Eland offers so much more than that! Their Reserve offers fishing, hiking, picnics, a zip line, suspension bridge, eagle lookout point, horse riding, a 4×4 track, paintball games and amazing wildlife. Visitors are welcome to self-drive through the Reserve or book a guided trip.

 

4. Get your adrenalin racing at the Wild 5 Adventures

Wild 5 offers five different activities; Abseiling, Water Rafting, a Wild Swing, Zip Line as well as an 84m Suspension Bridge.

1. Munch on homemade delights at KC’s Coffee Shop

Enjoy a creamy custard slice and a cup of coffee at KC’s Coffee Shop, while the little ones in your group take advantage of their outdoor playground. The coffee shop is nestled on a farm close to Shelly Beach and boasts incredible views of the surrounding area. New and in-season dishes are added to their specials board every week.

 

2. Purchase delicious treats at Tomarosa Farm Stall

There is nothing better than eating creamy, delicious ice cream on a hot summer’s day. Luckily every day on the South Coast is an ice cream day. Visit the Tomarosa Farm Stall and purchase some of the most delicious Zest ice cream and Clementines frozen yoghurt lollies.

1. Get a custom tattoo at Electric Lounge Tattoo Parlour

This custom tattoo parlour opened its doors in 2009. Their two resident tattooists and piercer offer a wide variety of different styles and pride themselves on the quality and versatility of their work. “Walk in’s” are welcome but subject to availability.

 

2. Unwind and celebrate good times at Highland Fryer Restaurant and Sports Pub

Enjoy a hearty meal and generous portions at a reasonable price at Highland Fryer Restaurant and Sports Pub. We highly recommend their Sunday lunch. While gobbling down your meal you can savour stunning views of Shelly Beach or watch the latest sports on one of their numerous televisions.
